Andreea Gorbatâi is Assistant Professor in Management of Organizations at the Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley, where she teaches Leadership and Organizational Behavior to undergraduate and MBA students. Since 2011, Professor Gorbatâi has also been teaching entrepreneurship, ethics, social networks, and strategy in Romania, at the international ASPIRE Academy summer program for young leaders and entrepreneurs. Her research interests are centered on exploring entrepreneurship, social networks, new market formation, and new forms of organizing. In recent work, she has used machine learning techniques to examine the importance of vivid narratives and storytelling for crowdfunding campaign success; the relationship between collective events, social movement values, and the emergent Maker-entrepreneur field; and the interaction between physical space, and material and social resources in the success of proto-entrepreneurs. Professor Gorbatâi has a keen interest in technology, entrepreneurship, innovation, open-source initiatives, and collective production platforms, and has been extensively involved in studying the latter two—Wikipedia, the Maker Movement, crowdfunding, and bitcoin are among the phenomena examined in her work. Professor Gorbatâi graduated with a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from Harvard Business School, and a Masters in Sociology from Harvard University. Prior to living in the United States, she attended the Gheorghe Şincai high school in Bucharest, Romania, competed in the national Mathematics Olympiads, and briefly attended the Academy of Economic Studies (ASE) in Bucharest.
